Why refrigerators struggle in Jacksonville’s heat
Northeast Florida’s heat and humidity make a refrigerator work harder than it would in a cooler climate. Condenser coils collect dust and pet hair, door gaskets lose their seal, and a warm kitchen keeps the compressor running longer. Summer thunderstorms and power surges can also damage control boards and temperature sensors. A fridge that runs all the time, sweats on the outside, grows frost in the freezer or leaves milk lukewarm is usually pointing to a specific, fixable part. The sooner it is checked, the less food you lose and the less strain you put on the compressor, which is the most expensive part of the appliance.
What happens during a refrigerator repair visit
We start by measuring the actual temperature in both compartments. The fresh-food section should sit around 37 to 40°F and the freezer near 0°F. Then we listen to the evaporator and condenser fans, inspect the coils, door seals and drain, and test the defrost system and temperature sensors. Before we replace anything we explain what failed, what it will cost and how long it will take. Common parts such as fan motors, defrost heaters, thermistors, water inlet valves and ice maker modules can usually be replaced in the same visit. If a part has to be ordered, we tell you up front and come back once it arrives.
Repair or replace, and how to avoid the next breakdown
As a rule, repairing makes sense when the refrigerator is under about 10 to 12 years old and the repair costs well under half of a comparable new model. Sealed-system failures on older units are the usual exception, and we will say so honestly. To keep your fridge healthy, vacuum the condenser coils twice a year, leave a small gap behind and above the unit for airflow, replace the water filter every six months and check the door seal by closing it on a sheet of paper: if it slides out easily, the gasket needs attention. Keeping the fridge reasonably full also helps it hold temperature more efficiently.
